Cruz Bay

All ferries roll into Cruz Bay, the main town on St. John, and it is a nice place to begin your island visit. Cruz Bay has good restaurants, bars, and plenty of shops for your enjoyment.

National Park Visitor Center
(open daily; 8 - 4:30 pm)

Located in Cruz Bay you'll definitely want to pop in here before you venture off to other parts of the island. Pick up park brochures featuring maps, trails, and must see sites and allow the park rangers to answer any questions you might have.

Annaberg Plantation Ruins

The most complete sugar plantation ruins in the Virgin Islands is takes approximately 30 minutes to tour (self-guided) the slave quarters, the 19th century Annaberg windmill (40 ft. high), horse mill, cistern, oven rum still, and dungeon. Seasonal tours and demonstrations highlight the life and work on a sugar mill and factory during the Danish Plantation era. More info the National Park Visitor Center in Cruz Bay.

Ruins of the Catherineburg Sugar Mill and
Rum Factory (Hammer Farms)

Restored in 1986 this is one of the earliest plantations on St. John (mid 1700s). Catherineberg served as headquarters for the 1733 slave revolt led by the enslaved African tribe, Amina warriors.

Petroglyphs and Sugarmill Ruins

Along the Reef Bay Trail you can explore petroglyphs done by the Tainos, one of the first Native Indian inhabitants on St. John and check out restored sugar mill ruins: Reef Bay Sugar Factory, the Josie Gut Plantation Ruins, and Estate Par Force.

Peace Hill and the ruined windmill at Christ of the Caribbean

Destroyed by Hurricane Marilyn in 1995 the windmill was built in 1950s among the Denis Bay Plantation ruins. It was donated to the British Islands National Park in 1975 as a symbol of Inner and Outer Peace.

Emmaus Moravian Church
(also known as Bethany Moravian Church)
in Coral Bay

Built near the end of the 1700s by Moravian missionaries who ministered to the slaves this church is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. The 18th century parish hall, vaulted cistern, and Dutch ovens have been beautifully renovated.

Fortberg in Coral Bay

Built on Fortberg Hill by the Danish in 1717 Fortberg was destroyed by the enslaved African tribe, Amina warriors, during the slave revolt of 1733. During the British occupation of St. John from 1807-1815 the British constructed a battery here.

The Battery
(M-F; 10 - 2 pm - free admission)

Located in the St. John's Administration building this small museum (located in the old prison cells) is built on an 18th century fort foundation and displays many seashells and old maps.

Elaine Ione Sprauve Museum
(M-F; 9 - 5 pm)

This small museum is great place for learning more about St. John's culture and history. Located just outside of Cruz Bay in a restored 1757 plantation the exhibits feature photographs, newspaper clippings, and paintings.

Ivan Jaden Museum

Learn more about the life of the great Russian tenor of the 20th century through historic documents, photos, videos, and over 5000 intriguing artifacts. You'll discover why and how this major artist fled Stalin's Russia in 1941 and more about his 8-year journey to the U.S..

Virgin Islands National Park - St. John
(National Park Underwater Trail)

You have not truly experienced St. John until visiting at least a few of the attractions this National Park offers.
